“Are you all right, dear?”

Kit blinked from behind the wheel of her old clunker car as her elderly neighbor came into focus.

Mrs. Murphy stood on the sidewalk next to Kit’s open car window with her two poodles in tow.

“Fine, Mrs. Murphy.”

Her neighbor’s sympathetic look said she knew better. “I made you a little treat for lunch. I know you don’t have time to eat right, not with all your jobs.”

“Thank you,” Kit said taking the package the cute elderly woman handed her through the window. “You really shouldn’t have though.”

“It’s my pleasure. And your newspaper, dear. It’s supposed to rain. I didn’t want it to get wet.” Mrs. Murphy thought of everything.

Kit placed the newspaper on the seat next to her. Her elderly widowed neighbor had befriended Kit the moment she‘d moved to this large otherwise impersonal city. After losing both her parents just two years before, Kit was grateful and Mrs. Murphy seemed to enjoy her company.

As her neighbor had predicted, it began to rain before Kit reached her first job.

“You know what she’s up to, don’t you?” her desk mate Angela said at lunch when Kit took out the wonderful homemade meal Mrs. Murphy had made her. “She’s fattening you up for her nephew.”

Kit laughed. Mrs. Murphy had mentioned once that Kit should meet her nephew, Bobby. Kit had told her she didn’t have time to date and her neighbor had never brought it up again.

Clearly Mrs. Murphy had decided her nephew deserved a woman who didn’t have to work three jobs, a woman who didn’t have a younger sister she was putting through college.

After her last job of the day, Kit climbed into her car and headed home. She’d taken a back road to avoid the traffic when, miles from home, her car engine made a loud bang and died. As she rolled to a stop, Kit regretted taking the back road. There was no traffic, no chance of anyone coming by who might help.

Now what was she going to do?

As she reached for her cell phone, she knocked her newspaper off the seat. Something fluttered to the floor. A flier. She picked it up. Speedy Garage and Towing.

Kit couldn’t help but smile. Mrs. Murphy. She must have slipped it in the newspaper. Several times she’d expressed concern about Kit’s old car.

“If you ever need the name of good mechanic…” Mrs. Murphy had said and given her a wink. The woman really did think of everything.

“Speedy Garage and Towing,” a man said when he answered.

“I’ve broken down on Old Mill Road. She gave him her name and the make, model and color of her car, as if there were a dozen cars broken down on this road tonight. But you never knew.

“Sit tight. I’ll be right there.” The man sounded downright cheerful considering the time and the weather.

True to his word, he arrived just minutes later in a big yellow tow truck.

Even though it was pouring, Kit got out and made her way to the tow truck.
